Dear Students,
I hope that you and your loved ones are in good health and spirits during these difficult days.
As you know, on 2 December 2020 Bilkent University Senate decided to postpone Fall semester final exams to a future period in the Spring semester, a time when pandemic conditions are projected to be better. This decision was taken to address health concerns voiced by students who do not wish to come to the campus for exams at a time when the pandemic is clearly peaking. It was also based on some student and faculty comments that face-to-face exams should be the preferred mode of assessment for reasons of academic integrity and fairness.
Based on recent feedback from our students and faculty, we have recognized that this decision carries the risk of causing a number of uncertainties, unforeseen inconveniences, and undue stress. Accordingly, the Senate reconvened on 4 and 5 December to discuss and consider other alternatives. After detailed deliberation, the Senate has decided that:
1. The Senate decision on 2 December 2002 has been rescinded.
2. The final exams will be held as planned previously at the end of the Fall semester, starting on 29 December.
3. The format of Fall semester final exams may take any combination of online written exams, online oral exams, and take-home exams. Conducting face-to-face exams in a course with a small number of students still remains an option, only if the course instructor and all students unanimously agree to do so.
4. English Preparatory Program exams will be administered online.
5. In consultation with their departments, course instructors will determine the most suitable exam format for their course that lends itself to smooth administration, is congruent with the learning goals of the course, and complies with the highest standards of academic integrity.
6. The format of midterm make-up exams will similarly be determined by the instructor.
I certainly hope that this decision addresses most of the concerns that you may have had and allows you to focus on your studies. I wish you all the best in the remainder of the semester and your final exams.
