Here’s a theory.
During what I call the “Eksi times”, social media was only known for Facebook and Twitter. However, both platform weren’t serious or organized enough for discussions. Social meeia platforms are still not meant to be used for argument. Take Twitter for example; you have a character limit, and you have to learn how to use their UI.
What happened?
1. Internet got better. We have more options for learning and communication now. Language learning enabled most of us to access world wide knowledge. When you ask a question, you want to reach as many people as possible to get the best answers. So, there is that.
2. Computers got a lot better. In past, 10 tab would mean a freeze or crash. Windows XP was especially infamous for poor resource management. Now, I keep 80-90 tabs constantly open. Bookmarks got a lot better. We have reading apps like Pocket, Instapaper. So, we don’t have to worry about losing links. It was a problem in past. Browser sync allowed us to save bookmarks and passwords securely.
Not only capacity is higher, but also things are more convenient bow.
3. This is the finishing blow; new alternatives emerged. Medium, Quora, Wattpat, Reddit got a new surge of popularity. Now that language learners are more common than in the past, and hobbies became more specific, people started looking for their tribe.

People want to connect without being trolled or judged. These days, everyone’s Instagram is private. They are very afraid of being exposed. Then, they would lose the facade. In a world everyone acts perfect, privacy and secrecy became more relevant than ever. So, people prefer to discuss in closed groups like WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord.
Any other ideas?
