The internet was crawling with people 10 years ago. Ekşi sözlük, inci sözlük, uludağ sözlük, İTÜ and tons of others had many users. Then something happened (probably WhatsApp and Twitter) and amount of people slowly degraded, everywhere became ghost towns. There wasn't this many internet users in Turkey back then, yet there isn't as many as people Online. Weird.

Everyone has a computer and phone. Thats why many people online in Social Media. People doesnt go out because they can talk, message and play games on computer or phone.

Bro, what do you say? I don't understand you. But I think you're right.

Demek istediği şey insanlar sosyal medya yüzünden dışarı çıkmıyor ve sohbet etmiyor.

I dunno actually. Has been everyone turned into addicted slaves of the social networks? I am craving for the old school ways of communication.

P.S: Don't worry about your broken English. It will be better as you are reading and writing.

Feels like we are evolving. Those forums you mentioned are all old and nostalgic forums we can say. Maybe it's because of that.

Here’s a theory.

During what I call the “Eksi times”, social media was only known for Facebook and Twitter. However, both platform weren’t serious or organized enough for discussions. Social meeia platforms are still not meant to be used for argument. Take Twitter for example; you have a character limit, and you have to learn how to use their UI.

What happened?

1. Internet got better. We have more options for learning and communication now. Language learning enabled most of us to access world wide knowledge. When you ask a question, you want to reach as many people as possible to get the best answers. So, there is that.

2. Computers got a lot better. In past, 10 tab would mean a freeze or crash. Windows XP was especially infamous for poor resource management. Now, I keep 80-90 tabs constantly open. Bookmarks got a lot better. We have reading apps like Pocket, Instapaper. So, we don’t have to worry about losing links. It was a problem in past. Browser sync allowed us to save bookmarks and passwords securely.
Not only capacity is higher, but also things are more convenient bow.

3. This is the finishing blow; new alternatives emerged. Medium, Quora, Wattpat, Reddit got a new surge of popularity. Now that language learners are more common than in the past, and hobbies became more specific, people started looking for their tribe.

People want to connect without being trolled or judged. These days, everyone’s Instagram is private. They are very afraid of being exposed. Then, they would lose the facade. In a world everyone acts perfect, privacy and secrecy became more relevant than ever. So, people prefer to discuss in closed groups like WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord.

Any other ideas?

What do you mean English is a “bad” language? You mean syntax? Language rules? I think it is one of the easiest languages to learn, and it is very useful. It has a wide use which is perfect. It is not the most widely used language in the world, of course. However it doesn’t have masculine, feminine or neutral genders or weird language-specific rules like Turkish. I have many friends in Europe learning Turkish. They all complain how Turkish makes no sense. When I ask Turkish people, me included, we cannot make sense of our language. I am an English teacher. One of the biggest challenges I face every day is the fact that nobody knows Turkish very well. They only know casual speech, but they don’t know grammar, syntax, spelling, conjunctions, adverbs, and so on. They are very weak in reading too. So, maybe we should teach our own language better before even touching a foreign one.
