The "Hashish user" etymology is mythological. The name comes from the Arabic word "hashishi" which literally means grass but also metaphorically means "outcast" or "outsider". The literal meaning was associated with the drug, but the metaphorical one was used as a term of abuse for an Islamic sect known as the Ismailis. They were disliked by the Islamic rulers of the time because they were a different sect. They also became enemies of Christian Crusaders, who adopted the term.
