"As far as I can tell, the X Compact is designed to be waterproof, but isn't tested or marketed as waterproof in the UK or anywhere else except Japan.
I think that's for two reasons, mostly because Sony got stung for a lot of warranty repairs (or at least the cost of refuting them) on previous models where customers were doing crazy things with them underwater or without checking flaps were closed, seals intact etc. What sounded like a marketing dream (and Sony sold, with videos of Z3s being unboxed underwater) turned into an aftermarket nightmare.
In Japan I understand that when a phone is sold as waterproof the customers realise that doesn't mean they can go high diving with them."
