Why can't we speak English?

Yes, we've been learning English since we were very young. But there is a general perception in our people. What am I going to do by learning English? What good is English for me? That's why there's not enough attention. Our people can't speak English.

Because the language effects all around of the life. Our people can't learn absolutely because they didn't know this. The language not only effects in the education period, it always effects our life, in short every language are the style of life.

Why can't we speak English? We learn English'in Elementary school, middle school, and high school but the result is nothing. We cannot speak English after years of learning English'in schools. Isn't there a problem? The main reason for that is; we learn only grammar rules. Knowing only all the grammar rules doesn't help you to speak English. You need to combine your words with grammar to speak English, in this point, grammar is an essential thing. When you know grammar, you can create more beautiful sentences. When you don't know grammar rules; your sentence will look like this:
  • I how can GO to the hospital?
That's okay, people will understand you even if you create sentences like this. If you know grammar rules your sentences will look like this and it's going to be more understandable:
  • How can I GO to the hospital?
More clear, isn't it? That's why we have to know grammar, knowing a little grammar will make your sentences more clear. You have to know at least Basic grammar rules, and a few tenses.

Let's move back to the main point of this text. Schools in Turkey care about grammar so much. Grammar is important, but not that much. They only teach grammar and that's not going to help you speak English. Look at these sentences:
  • I was at school when you called me.
  • I was in school when you called me.
The only difference between these sentences are is the preposition that used. One is at, One is in. Is there any wrong, people will absolutely understand you anyways. Here is another example:
  • You have must understood me.
  • You must have understood me.
The Upper sentence is grammarly wrong, the bottom One is correct. I could understand both sentences. According to a textbook; that's unacceptable, but for me that's okay. Both sentences are understandable. Feel Free to share your thoughts.

You education System is a "SHİT" then you came and say why we cant speak English.
Really =?

There is only so much a teacher can do. They try to teach you, most of the time anyway, but you either disregard it entirely or don't care enough about it. It comes down to the student like every other subject. If you regarded your math classes as "free time" (AKA boş ders) like you did with your English classes, you'd be failing at math too.

Learning a new language is hard. Students need to be taught that. And they shouldn't face anything judgmental when they make a mistake. It's a new language for God's sake. Just cut them some slack.

I'm not agree with you about that. It maybe true for the low graded high schools. I graduated from an anotolian high school. My teachers were expert. My friends and I knew we have to learn that language because it's a necessary. First of all, it's a global language. It's most used language on the world. It doesn't matter what job you do, you have to be able to speak a few words in english. Also knowing only english is not enough though.

Anyway. When I was at high school, me and my friends cared about it. Only I was good at English. Don't be fooled when I say I was good at it. I was good when you compare me against my friends :). After high school, I realized one thing. I'm not able to speak. I was thinking so much before speak. At university my courses are %100 english. My classmates are not Turkish. At least most of all. Like 80 percent. I realized that curriculum of english at high school was just a waste of time. Btw even my teachers tried to teach us appropriate to curriculum but I learned english from games, movies and tv shows mostly. Turkish accent is so horrible and most of the teachers have it. So when you learn listening from Turkish teachers, you will have serious problems while listening natives.

@TheAny Heh, doubt any of y'all cared. Would any of you spend just as much time -hell, half the time, even- studying English as math? Were you pushed just as hard to learn English as math? It's true that I went to a pretty mediocre high school, but even there people cared and made an effort to learn. There were even some guys who were better than me at the time. Make no mistake, I wasn't tutored or anything. My teacher once said I was a natural but who knows. Eh, I digress.

Of course you'd think high school English is not enough, because it simply isn't. They can't change the system because people can't (or refuse to) learn English from the get go. So they decide to force students to at least learn the very basics of the language, things like simple tenses and commonly used words until they go to university, where they'd have to learn English.

I too have to admit Turkish accent is a big turnoff, but you don't always have to listen to them. There are zillions of sources that you can use to listen to whichever accent you want. Practice makes it perfect, you'll be able to understand anything eventually. Just don't go "Mehhh I can't understand this. I'll go back to my comfort zone and watch Turkish videos."

And I just wonder, would you mind telling me where do you study that approx. 80% of your classmates aren't Turkish?
